To My Lily,
Today you turn 5 years old. My sweet little baby is not a baby anymore. Soon you will be in Kindergarten, learning to read, bringing home simple math problems to work on, mastering your little art projects.
There really aren’t words to describe how much joy you have brought to our lives, but I will do my best. When I was a young girl, I always knew that I wanted to be a mommy. I dreamt of being a mom. When I saw my daughter in my dreams—she was you. She was this little spunky girl. She had long brown hair; she had big, beautiful eyes. She sparkled. She was sassy and strong, but she was also so sweet and girly. She loved princesses and unicorns, puppies and ponies. She loved sparkly pink dresses, she was creative, imaginative, smart, and she loved to twirl around in the living room. She was you. All my life, the little girl I dreamt up in my head was YOU, Lily Noelle.
When daddy and I found out that you were in my belly, I was so overjoyed. I knew I was going to have that daughter that I had dreamed of. Much to my surprise (and joy) I was told that I was going to have twins! Okay—double the awesomeness!!! As the pregnancy progressed we learned that your twin was not quite strong enough to grow and be born.
I was okay with not having your twin because I feel it was meant to be that way. However, in the quiet moments, I found myself begging God to let me keep you. “Please let me keep her.” “PLEASE LET ME KEEP HER!!”. I didn’t let on, but I was scared. The thought of you not being born terrified me. I would lie awake in bed some nights just feeling you move and kick—because that was my reassurance that you were okay. I was always so keenly aware of your presence. I didn’t let my guard down. I wanted you so badly. You were my angel.
Thankfully my prayers were answered and five years ago today you came into our world. You came a few weeks early, because that is how YOU wanted it but you arrived safely. You were healthy. You were skinny and red and wrinkly and all covered in peach fuzz—but you were here. I cried and cried. I couldn’t breathe. My miracle. My beautiful little angel.
You were a tiny baby (just over 5 pounds). You couldn’t keep yourself warm so the hospital said they could keep you in the incubator in their nursery or you could sleep on me, on my skin. You had to be kept warm. So during your first few weeks of life, you slept on my chest. We would wake up and I would feed you, then you would go back to sleep again. Those were some of the most exhausting days of my life because I never “really” slept. I would lie there with you on my chest and I would and listen to you breathe, and relish all of your little sounds. I would lie there, so grateful that you were here. Those were some of the most exhausting days of my life, but also some of the most beautiful and I will never forget that amazing time that we shared.
Today, I look at you and you still take my breath away. You are beautiful beyond words. When you cuddle up next to me, I breathe in your scent and am so at peace. I hope that as time passes, and you grow, you will never lose sight of how much I love you. I know that raising you will not always be easy. I know that there will be days when you feel like you hate me, and I will be wondering where my little girl went. While I am scared of that time coming, I also know that we have a bond that can never be broken. You are a precious gift, my sweet girl. God let me keep you and I have no way to express how grateful I am for that…..except to love you with all that I am.
Happy Birthday, sweetie!
Love,
Mommy
